Labor welcomes the announcement of funding for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) for 2015‑16 to continue the critical work of preserving its priceless collection of cultural materials.
This funding will help AIATSIS maintain the world’s largest collection of materials relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including film clips, images, sound recordings and printed materials.
The AIATSIS collections are a source of knowledge used by academics and researchers across Australia and around the world in their research on the world’s oldest living cultures.
As a cultural institution, AIATSIS is also marked by its commitment to community engagement and collaboration.
With so much Indigenous history still in the hands of communities, AIATSIS’ partnership approach to preserving and protecting this history is delivering a resource of international significance.
