First the Prime Minister and then the Education Minister got it wrong on their own higher education policy – now the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Josh Frydenberg, has gotten it wrong too.
The HELP debt is repaid only on incomes of more than $50,000 and still then, student contributions will represent only 40 per cent of the cost of that individual’s education.
The taxpayer funds the rest.
JOSH FRYDENBERG – THE AUSTRALIAN – 6 JUNE 2014
Wrong. Under the Abbott Government higher education package, students and their families will now on average have to shoulder 50 per cent of the cost of a university education.
“At the moment the taxpayers are funding 60 per cent of the tuition fees of university students, and universities' students are making up 40 per cent. Under our changes, it will be 50-50.”
CHRISTOPHER PYNE – ABC INSIDERS – 1 JUNE 2014
“So badly designed, so poorly understood is this Government’s policy that not even they can understand the ins and outs of it,” Shadow Minister for Higher Education Senator Kim Carr said.
“The sooner this unfair, unworkable and unpopular package is ditched, the better.”
