A year ago today Tony Abbott promised no cuts to education.
“I want to give people this absolute assurance, no cuts to education, no cuts to health, no changes to pensions and no changes to the GST.”
TONY ABBOTT – ABC INSIDERS – 1 SEPTEMBER 2013
Like all the variations on this theme in his pre-election pick-a-promise merry-go-round, Tony Abbott’s “absolute assurance” was jettisoned in the Budget.
The Abbott Government’s cuts to education, including ripping $5.8 billion from higher education, make an absolute mockery of this “absolute assurance”.
Universities across Australia will take a hit of 20 per cent in funding for undergraduate places, meaning they will have to raise fees by a minimum of 30 per cent just to cover the cuts
And that’s before you get to fee deregulation, which independent modelling has shown could open the door to $100,000 degrees.
None of the Abbott Government’s higher education policies were canvassed before the election.
Only a single line was devoted universities in the Liberal Party’s manifesto:
“We will ensure the continuation of the current arrangements of university funding."

The next time Tony Abbott gives the Australian people an “absolute assurance”, be prepared for the opposite to happen.
